The ability to take a good photograph is a skill that is cultivated and learned, not innate. Instagram and automatic camera settings are fine for "just snapshots"...But this course is aimed to take your photography to the next level, with full control and understanding of photographic principles and techniques.

Photography 101 provides you the skills to take full creative control over your photographs.   Over the course of a month, you will learn to take beautiful photos with a digital or film camera.

This is the Africa Photo Academy's beginner photography course, but is appropriate for those with experience to enhance and refine their skills under professional instruction. Our approach is to briefly touch on optics, theory, and equipment, before spending the bulk of the class time on practical instruction.

The following information will be covered during your introductory course:

Exposure / Aperture / Shutter Speed/ ISO / Depth of Field / Composition and Creativity / Lighting / Camera Settings / Lens Selection / Advanced Digital Settings / Post-Production

Any make of camera is OK - Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, or other. The student does not need to have a working knowledge of the camera settings, but should be expected to learn and experiment in off-class hours.

There will be at least one practical field trip during the course. Students will travel with their lecturer to a site in Cape Town to focus on aspects of their photography that the instructor and student have identified as appropriate.

Classes are intentionally kept at a minimum amount of students to facilitate the best learning environment. Photography 101 is taught by our experienced lecturer Johnny Miller. He has shot for various clients in both the USA and South Africa. His personal website is
